In April 2020, during a period marked by global uncertainty, the idea emerged of a fictional underwater world where marine organisms live in harmony and discovery is still wide open. What began as a short story for a child gradually evolved into a science-inspired narrative space designed to bridge polar marine research and children’s imagination.
FabulouScience is a science communication project that blends polar marine science with storytelling, creating an accessible and imaginative entry point into complex environmental topics such as climate change, marine ecosystems and plastic pollution.
In this story, we explore the polar marine life, infused with a touch of fantasy, while also addressing sensitive topics.
Alessandra D’Angelo, Ph.D. in Polar Sciences
I am a biogeochemical oceanographer specializing in the Arctic Ocean, with research focused on the interactions between climate processes, ocean biochemistry, and ecosystem responses.
My work investigates how climate change and human-driven pressures shape Arctic Ocean dynamics and biogeochemical cycles. In particular, I study how Arctic amplification influences meltwater balance, particle fluxes, and the transport of organic and inorganic matter.
I also assess the distribution and impact of land- and ice-derived debris, including microplastics, as part of ongoing marine pollution in polar environments. Another key focus of my research is the role of Arctic change in marine methane cycling, microbial metabolism, and greenhouse gas emissions.
Finally, I explore how these interconnected processes affect Arctic marine ecosystems, with particular attention to zooplankton communities, which play a central role in polar food webs.
Alongside research, I am engaged in science communication, with the aim of making polar marine science more accessible and engaging for wider audiences. FabulouScience is part of this effort: a project that connects real science with storytelling to support curiosity and learning, especially for younger audiences.
